One-way clutch sleeves are one-way couplings consisting of thin-walled, seamless outer rings with locking ramps, plastic cages, pressure springs, and needle rollers. They transmit torque in one direction and are radially space-saving. The clutch sleeves are available without or with bearings. Sleeve clutches are highly precise in engagement because the individual spring loading of the needle rollers ensures constant contact between the shaft, needle rollers, and locking ramps. They allow high shifting frequencies due to their low mass and consequently low moment of inertia of the locking elements. Additionally, they have very low no-load friction torque. Sleeve clutches can be used in various applications, for example as stepping clutches, backstops, or overrunning clutches. In these cases, the sleeve clutch takes on the overrunning or holding function.
